Where is the best affordable country to retire in Central America?

by admin on February 23, 2010

low crime, warm climate away from Hurricane,
Not moving to a third world country; I believe in better answer then the one I just readed.

I’m retired and live in Honduras, but did a lot of research and visiting before picking it. Panama, Belize and Costa Rica have the best infrastructure but are much more expensive to live in than Guatemala, Nicaragua or Honduras. For many reasons I didn’t like El Salvador much. I didn’t, and still don’t see that much difference in the crime between any of them and with Daniel Ortega, and his best buddy Chavez back in power in Nicaragua, that leaves Honduras and Guatemala. Honduras’ so called "coup" is over and done with now and every one has high expectations from the new president who definitely knows the value of tourism and the large expat communities in the country. I have found the medical care to be top notch (most of the doctors are US trained) and very inexpensive. Living on the north coast is laid back, easy and, again, low cost. You will pretty much have to take your chances with the hurricanes, but most of C. America is south of the usual hurricane path.

Nicaragua is the safest country in Central America according to crime statistics. In Nicaragua you can live on a gorgeous lake, on the Pacific Ocean, in the mountains, in a colonial town, or on the Caribbean. There are many options for retirees in Nicaragua and the government is giving incentives for retirees who want to move to Nicaragua. You can import up to $10,000 in household items tax free and you can import a vehicle or purchase a vehicle tax free every 5 years. It is easy to apply and get retirement residency status in Nicaragua as well. Do your research and find a realtor you feel comfortable working with on your retirement investment.

Guatemala is BEAUTIFUL and unique…the feeling you get from the country is truly indescribable, and it CAN be safe as long as you are a quiet person (don’t drink, don’t go to casinos, low profile) and if you keep common sense, it’ll be okay, and i’ve lived in Guatemala for a year, and the weather is by far the BEST in the world. there’s a rainy season, but it literally rains for maybe 30 minutes everyday, depending on the forecast each day. has GREAT infrastructure (the apartments are better than the apartments here in the U.S) and goods are fairly cheap, except major imports like cars/electronics. but this country is very dangerous with the gangs.

El Salvador…it’s hot, it’s VERY VERY VERY dangerous, and it’s not that nice. the infrastructure is below average.

Honduras…it’s hot, it’s VERY VERY VERY dangerous, and it’s not that nice…ditto el salvador.
unless you’re going to be @ the beach every day, which seems irrelevant.

Nicaragua…it’s hot, it’s not dangerous, it’s not that nice…it’s very poverty stricken, but u can settle in the beach/tourist area in montelimar. it’s very safe, with a low amount of gang members. poor infrastructure, but it’s a quiet place to live.

Costa Rica…definitely seems like your best bet..it’s kinda hot, but it’s the weather your expect from a Latin American country. it’s safe with very very low number of gang members..the infrastructure is good, and talking about tourist attractions..has beaches, hot springs, and nature you can enjoy.

Panama…still dangerous because it’s linked to colombia, but it’s very nice place to live…reminds me very much of Miami with the high skylines…but it’s expensive to live there. as well as Costa Rica…

my recommendations are Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala depending on the lifestlye you want.

Hi Sara. Please can you send me fact sheet too on Ecudor. Was looking at Panama but seems circumstances have changed there and very little chance of citizenship. How long to qualify for citizenship in Ecudor?
