What is the best English speaking country to retire to?

by admin on February 25, 2009

I have a very small retirement income of $1,500 per month. I do have savings of around $150,000. What is the best english speaking country to retire to?

Panama or Costa Rica. Even though Costa Rica isn't officially English speaking, there are so many American retirees there and most people speak English.

Should Ted Kennedy Retire so we can get a person in that can actaully vote?

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) It is very cheap. The civil war is settling now. You can settle in the South (This part has not been affected by Civil War).
It is quite scenic there and Sri lankans are quite literate, and Medical Care there is overall good.

Phillipines. No joke, with your income you could hire a cook, pay medical bills and live in a very comfy place.

I highly recommend that you look into Brazil. My uncle move there for his retirement.

Philippines..you can live there as a rich person..your monthly income is equivalent to almost 75,000 php..btw, i’m a filipino student..my mother’s income is less than half that amount and i think we live over the poverty line..lol(middle-class?i guess so..)
compared to other countries, basic needs are cheap(food, clothes, hous rentals) and many filipinos can understand english(and we are friendly too!:))..:):)
i hope i helped you..smile

For my concern Philippines is one of the best Country in Asia who speak good and easy to understand but no way to India,I travelled India for two times it is a good place to travel but not to agree that they are the best in Asia, I still say Philippines.

who ever wrote that nonsense about Costa Rica.
It is a Spanish country and there are not a lot of English speakers.

The retirees are spread all over the country.
And there are a lot of thieves in the country.

Many retirees lose their savings from the women there, so beware.

i would say philippines..currently we they are VISA programs for retirees..most AMERICANS retire in CLARK-SUBIC area…KOREANS and JAPANESE have retiree homes in TAGAYTAY..they prefer PHILIPPINES because of the people, low cost of living, and they speak the english language fluently…KOREANS for example chose to retire here because of their children and the the low cost access to study the english language..

I would say Philippines, not being bias but its the fact that Philippines is a 3rd world’s largest english speaking country, not just in speaking but also in writing, and to mention that we can’t find a stable job if we can’t speak in english, our examinations in school are written in english, all of it except our native subject which is “Filipino” our teachers/professors/instructors are required to speak in english whenever they teach.. Also, the cost of living here is not a problem compared to other asian countries.

Can you tell me which part of Philippines is least affected by hurricanes ? Also, are there any American Expat organizations that can help with information and initial guidance ?

Thanks

@AnanD: Philippines is a tropical country and just beside the Pacific ocean where most of the hurricanes are born. Only the hurricane itself can answer what path it’s will be travelling to.
I vote for Philippines . You’ll never get bored and your a millionaire if you live here.
