Or are they mostly third world.
Hong Kong and Singapore have the similar quality of life to some big cities in the states (like NYC, LA, San Francisco…)
These cities are very modernize and urban planning are excellent, compare to other Asian cities. Plus, people in these cities have better English ability than others. If you don't mind the language barrier, Seoul, Busan (S. Korea), Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya (Japan) can be good choices as well.
Personally, I prefer Singapore because it is the cleanest cities I even been, plus, people are nice, things are cheap (compare to the U.S.), and majority of the people speak good English.

I think S. Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are pretty much up there..maybe India too. I'm just trying to remember what my Geography professor said.. I'm really not sure of the rest, but I can be mistaken. [;

My own experience.
GAYA said INDIA?that make me feel laughing so much,there are only few cities in ASIA and SOUTHEAST ASIA have similar standard to U.S.A living and some i would say more even better than U.S.A thought,but third world countries in AFRICA.maybe north korea and myanmar are the only two poorest in asia anyway!

INDIA got over 1 billions people now right behind CHINA and people begger and died on the street coz of hunger,you need to check that gaya!
Yeah..I agree with TGG it would either have to be Hong Kong or Singapore,mostprobably Singapore as it is more diversified thus majority can converse in english.
I am not sure if there is any country in Asia that is to be categorise as third world country.But what is very obvious in some country eg India,the gap between the rich and the poor is very wide.

I am prefer Singapore. I have been living here for 2 years now. Public transport are great. Food fantastic. Close to anywhere in Asia (Bali, Bangkok..name it). Internet, Cable TV, Cellphone are everywhere. This country is techno-savy nation.
Problem : the price of rent/buy property now is rocketing here. You may find difficulty to get cheap accommodation with US standard.

Probably Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and China have similar living standards

Hong Kong and Macau SAR's have shitty standards of living. Majority of HKers live in public rental housing estates cause they can't afford to pay for private however small, because of a lack of space and property prices. Only the rich people have a good life.
It can't compare to most American cities!

I'd add Bangkok to the list (Singapore, HK) of not the major cities in the States but the medium ones. If you can get past the language you'll see most people own their own houses, food is cheap, many companies give cars. Government helps with population control so you don't see poor people all over the streets. They have good transportation systems-clean, cheap and reliable especially now with the subway plus the BTS traffic is not a major problem in Bangkok.
