I live in Britain, but in terms of places I would like to live in Europe – the South of France, Amalfi Coast in Italy, the Algarve in Portugal, the Spanish Balearic Islands, Corsica and the Greek Islands would all feature in my list.
Is America the best country to live in?

I can think of several I would love to visit (France, Italy, Sweden, Germany) but, to risk a cliche, I wouldn't want to permanently live there.

Italy or Great Britain. Rome or London.

For me it would have to Brussels, Belgium, hands down. They are the most pleasant, civilised and entertaining group of people I've encountered in the whole of Southern Europe. After Brussels, I'd say France and finally the UK.

netherlands, norway, sweden. Maybe one of those.

Croatia.
A place where time has no meaning, business takes place over a coffee, family values still exist and I dare let my wife walk down the street without her getting mugged, raped or murdered.
A place with a population of 4.5 million and 56000 sq km of land – compared to the UK's 62 million crammed in 245000 sq km.
A place where the sun actually does shine in the Summer!!
And guess what – that's where I'm retiring to in about 4 years. Yipeeeeeeee!!!!

…"NONE OF THEM…I have lived in Spain…I have lived in France…The other country's, I wouldn't give a second thought….. All I want is to live in England back under its own ruling… All the nice things about England have been ruined by the EU… Soon this country will be down and out……And I bet you then the EU wont want to know…. They are jumping on the band wagon and using our money to benefit their own pockets…..England already owes billions… They are controlling our every move….. I don't want that…so I am voting "UKIP" the party that is standing up for Great Britain and I believe in its manifesto….
……So VOTE…….."UKIP"…..For a Better Britain…….

France. My sister and her husband already live near Albi; she's a teacher, he's a doctor, and they both work locally. The kids love it; they've learned French and according to my sister, who is fluent, they've not only picked it up incredibly quickly but inside of a year they already speak the language better than she does.
She sings the praises of everything from the education system to the health care, the transport network to the local culture. And the aloof response to the British accent disappears as soon as she says (and I apologise if I get this wrong, my French is disinterested O Level standard) 'Non, je suis Ecossais.' Scotland and France have been allies for centuries, primarily due to a mutual distrust of the English, I suspect, but that's not hugely important anymore. The fact is the people remember that Scottish is not the same as English. And that's important… unless you're English.
My sister is quite fussy about who or what you lavishes praise upon; if it's good enough for her, it would be good enough for me. Ultimately, she says the whole standard of life is better than living anywhere in the UK. And that's what would seal it.
However; the Lady Wife and I are off to New Zealand in a month. I fully expect that non European country will suffice… and I won't have to learn a language to live there.
