America is suppose to be the best country, but yet so many americans are depressed. But why?

your basis is wrong. us is not a good place to live in. In China, we had a tv program and in it was a famous line: if you love someone, take him to NY, ’cause it’s heaven; if you hate someone, take him to NY, ’cause it’s hell.
us is a place for someone and hell for others.
it’s a rule. like you want to be democratic for someone, then you must be autocratic for others.

We have a lack of core family values. The divorce rate is over 60%. We do not have a core sense of culture so most Americans just go by what the media claims is right and wrong. We do not consider much to be sacred, so what do we have to hold onto, material luxuries? Well sure we have access to a lot of "material luxuries" but guess what, materials will not make you happy but for so long.
We are a miserable people with a great deal of freedom that turns out to not mean that much to anyone because we all take it for granted in one way or another.

I am an American who has spent a great deal of time (and still do) observing our society.
So many addicted to alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, despondent about relationships or financial situations. So many had hopes dashed and don’t see any where to turn. Why is it the best country? Because of the higher standard of living mostly but Japan has a high standard of living also. It’s hard to keep up with such a high standard. I live in an area where the rent is high. People are having trouble paying their rent, or paying for their houses. Besides that are the gangs. Young people who run into trouble with gangs are like almost dead. Many young people are shot on the streets in Richmond and in Oakland not far from here but it could be anywhere.
